EVAPO-RUST® is non-corrosive to steel and does not harm brass, copper, aluminum, gold, lead, titanium, steel, cast iron, chrome solder points, vinyl, plastic, rubber, silicone, glass, cork, or wood. Designed as a soak, EVAPO-RUST® has an indefinite shelf life* and can be used over and over until it absolutely stops working. On average, one gallon de-rusts up to 300 pounds of light to moderately rusted steel.
How Evapo-Rust Works:
EVAPO-RUST® works at a pH of 6.1 to 7 (neutral) through selective chelation. This is a process in which a large synthetic molecule forms a bond with metals and holds them in solution. Most chelating agents bind many different metals. The active ingredient in EVAPO-RUS®T bonds to iron exclusively (the competitors bond to many metals). It can remove iron from iron oxide, but is too weak to remove iron from steel because the iron is held much more strongly. Click the icon to enlarge the "How it works" picture.
EVAPO-RUST® is highly recommended by the NRA gunsmithing school and is utilized by FBI, CIA, NATO and other law enforcement and forensics agencies. EVAPO-RUST® perfect for removing weapon finishes such as Bluing, Parkerizing, Zinc Phosphate, and Browning. Anodizing, powder coating, chrome, nickel, ion bonding, paint, and most other coatings will not be removed as long as they do not contain oxides. EVAPO-RUST® will not harm lead or solder points.
EVAPO-RUST® is easy to use. Fully immerse the rusted item in EVAPO-RUST® and check progress in about 30 minutes; no scrubbing necessary. Soak times will vary from 30 minutes to 24 hours depending on severity of rust, type of steel, and temperature. EVAPO-RUST® is water based, therefore the active molecules will slow down as temperature decreases and increase as temperature increases. We recommend utilizing EVAPO-RUST® at a bath temperature above 60° F.
EVAPO-RUST® has a surfactant to aid in penetrating oils and dirt. However, surface contaminants do slow the process and can shorten the life of EVAPO-RUST® . Oils, greases and cosmoline should be removed prior to de-rusting. Cleaning the part prior to soaking in EVAPO-RUST will also help in the disposal of the spent product.
Once the item has been de-rusted, you have several options:
1)Wash and rinse the item off and go to the next process for painting, coating, etc.
2) Wash & rinse the item off and apply a long term rust inhibitor such as Rust Bandit (Indoor Water Based Rust Inhibitor)
3) Wash & rinse the item off and apply a long term rust inhibitor such as CarWell CP90 (Outdoor Oil Based Rust Inhibitor)
You can use Evapo-Rus®t to remove the rust from a gas tank in one of two ways described below, depending on if your tank is still attached or has been removed:
1) Completely fill the tank with Evapo-Rus®t and allow to sit for 2 – 4 hours. Drain completely and rinse well with water. Air dry and fill with gasoline immediately to eliminate flash rust.
2) Pour in 1 gallon of Evapo-Rus®t and rotate gas tank every hour until the rust has been removed. Drain completely and rinse well with water. Air dry and fill with gasoline immediately to eliminate flash rust.
EVAPO-RUST® is non-hazardous and ships U.S. Postal, UPS or regular freight (class 55). The product is sewerable in neat form and, in most cases, only the chelated iron content of the solution will dictate disposal requirements. The pH of virgin EVAPO-RUST® is 6.1. The pH of the spent solution will vary from 6.1 to 7, which means there is no need to neutralize the already neutral solution. Check with your local water treatment facility and dispose of according to local, state, and federal guidelines.
EVAPO-RUST® has an indefinate shelf life* and can be used over and over until it absolutely stops working. Only water is lost to evaporation. EVAPO-RUST® has a tremendous work load. One gallon can remove 1/2 pound of pure dry rust. Rust is about 1/17 the weight of iron by volume, which means its workload is substantial. On average, one gallon de-rusts up to 300 pounds of light to moderately rusted steel. As the iron is removed from the iron oxide, carbon from the rust is released. Some parts may have a black film after using EVAPO-RUST®. High carbon steel and tool alloy steel items, when de-rusted, will have a darker appearance. The carbon can be removed simply by wiping with a cloth when rinsing with water. The more you de-rust, the blacker the solution becomes. EVAPO-RUST® is spent when it is pitch black and no longer performs.
*Shelf life is for un-opened product. Once opened, The life of the bath will vary due to biodegradability (bacteria introduced into the solution). After using Evapo-Rus®t, it is better to cover the solution, but still allow air to the bath. Pouring the solution back into a sealed container will allow the anaroebic bacteria to begin the degredation process. Used, open baths have continued to operate for over a 12 month period.

Can I spray it on?
EVAPO-RUST® is designed as a dip/soak, not a spray. EVAPO-RUS®T only works in the liquid form. When sprayed on a surface, the water in the solution will evaporate before de-rusting can be completed. However, if you spray it on a surface and scrub with a brush or pad, it will greatly reduce the amount of scrubbing necessary to remove the rust.

Do the parts need to be completely clean before immersion?
No, but we highly recommend it. EVAPO-RUST® has detergents which penetrate oils and dirt. However, surface contaminants do slow the process. The soils must be penetrated before EVAPO-RUST® can come in contact with the rust underneath. Soil residue will also shorten the life of EVAPO-RUST®. Heavy greases and cosmoline should be removed prior to de-rusting.

What about surfaces too large to soak?
It is possible to use Evapo-Rus®t to remove rust from some surfaces too large to soak. Saturate a fake chamois or other tightly knit material in Evapo-Rust®. Place the saturated material on/around the surface, evenly press to make sure the material is in contact with the surface, then cover with plastic to keep the material from drying out.

What about bluing and other coatings?
EVAPO-RUST® will remove sacrificial oxide coatings and is perfect for removing weapon finishes such as Bluing, Parkerizing, Zinc Phosphate, and Browning.
Anodizing, Cobalt Tungsten Carbide, Powder Coating, Chrome, Nickel, Paint, and most other coatings will not be removed as long as they do not contain oxides. EVAPO-RUST® will not harm lead or solder points.

Are there any metals I should not soak in Evapo-rust®?
EVAPO-RUST® is not recommended for use on magnesium or magnesium alloys.

Can I use Evapo-Rust® to clean brass, copper, and/or aluminum?
It depends on what you are trying to clean. Evapo-rust® will not damage any of these metals and will clean oils and other soils. However, it will not remove corrosion from them. It is designed to remove rust (oxides of IRON).

How long does Evapo-Rust® last?
One gallon of EVAPO-RUST will remove 1/2 pound of pure, dry rust. That averages removing rust from approximately 300 pounds of moderately rusted steel. When not in use, it is best to cover (but not airtight) to keep out bugs. If any of the bath evaporates, simply add fresh water.

How do I know when the Evapo-Rust® is spent?
The bath will turn completely black and will not perform. The pH will be approximately 7.2 and the specific gravity will be about 1.08.

How do I dispose of the spent solution?
If you have not introduced hazardous waste (oil,grease, certain paints, etc.) into the bath, only the iron content of the solution should dictate how it can be disposed. In most cases, it is sewarable. It is recommended to check local & federal disposal requirements.

Some pieces get a black film on them, what is it?
The black is carbon from the steel. Generally high carbon steel is used in making items that are flexible (e.g. springs, saw blades, etc.). High carbon steel and tool alloy steel items, when de-rusted, will have a darker appearance. Much of the carbon can be removed simply by wiping with a cloth.
